PRESIDENT'S MONTHLY MESSAGE

Dear WCRW Members and Guests,

With all of the political fanfare these days, I find myself glued to the news.
Today all of the national polls suggest that none of our Republican Presidential Candidates are strong enough to beat the current president. All may not be lost, and I for one, have not given up hope.

BONNIE'S BLOG!!

"I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and the desire to enjoy the world.  This makes it hard to plan the day."
                                E.B. White

From the above quote, I am finding it harder these days to see that I can do anything about the improvement of this world.  Yet I feel that I just can't give up hope that we can make a difference in what happens to our country.   Which makes the next part of the quote, planning my day the hard, but really important part.

My mornings are spent browsing the websites for the latest political news.  Then there's Rush to listen to midmorning.   Now, how am I going to fit in all the other things I have to get done before Special Report at 4:00 PM on Fox News?  You see my daily planning can be complicated.   But, now I feel I have a special mission, which is to do this research, so that I can save you who are reading this a lot of time.

One of the items of news this week was Indiana passing and Governor Daniels signing the state's Right to Work law.  Indiana now joins 22 other states which have a Right to Work law.  And Utah is one of the Right to Work states!  The Heritage foundation's "Morning Bell" featured Indiana's new law:

This Washington Examiner article
(Click to read article)  continues the discussion of the state of unionization in the country.  While unionization of private company workers continues to fall, the unionization of public employees continues to expand.  Being unionized puts these public employees in adversarial relationships with the taxpayers who fund their paychecks.

Another article, again from the Washington Examiner, discusses why there has been a fall in union membership among private companies and a rise in membership in the public sector.

Well, I'm really on a roll here now.  Here is another article on why we as Republicans should really be up in arms with these public employee unions:  Click here to read.  They really have a racket going on here, don't they?

Well, I'm going to stay on the subject a bit longer.   As a teacher, I was a public employee for most of my working life.  I saw what happened to education in California when teachers got collective bargaining.   It didn't take long for California's education system to go from being one of the best in the nation to falling to near bottom.   Fortunately for me, I was able to retire in 1992 and missed the great decline.   The following link is a fairly long read, but it gives lots of good information on collective bargaining in our public institutions:

Our Utah Legislature is back in session and this caught my eye.  Being a fairly new resident of Utah, I'm beginning to see what the Federal Government's hold on nearly 70 percent of Utah's land is doing to the state.  Rep. Ken Ivory, Republican, from West Jordan, along with several others in the Legislature, is taking on the task of getting Utah's land back.  I found the following article on the subject.   Bill Stakes Claim To Federal Lands in Utah

I think I've given you enough to "chew" on this week, and I have to get on with planning the rest of my day.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

LaRene Leavitt Cox, our president, was born and raised in Washington County.  She grew up in the small town of Veyo where her parents taught her the value of hard work and self reliance. After graduating from Dixie High School she attended Brigham Young University earning her Bachelor of Fine  Arts Degree.  It was there that she met and married her sweetheart of 32 years, Dean J Cox.
Together they made their home in St. George and raised four beautiful children.

Her interest in politics began early.  She and Dean enjoyed helping Republican candidates with various local, State, and Federal campaigns.  She has served for many years as a County and State Delegate, Neighborhood Caucus Secretary/Treasurer, and is currently serving on the Washington County Republican Party Executive Committee Member.

THE REPUBLICAN CREED:

I BELIEVE, as Lincoln did, that the proper function of the government is to do for the people only those things that have to be done, but cannot be done by individuals.

I BELIEVE faith in the individual is the only true foundation of our national strength.

I BELIEVE that free enterprise and encouragement of the individual incentive have
given this nation an economic system second to none.

I BELIEVE in equal rights and equal justice for all regardless of race, sex,
creed or color.

I BELIEVE we must retain those principles of the past worth, retaining, yet always be receptive of new ideas.

I BELIEVE that in the spirit of international kinship we must help other free nations
defend themselves from aggression when so requested.

FINALLY, I BELIEVE that through the Republican Party these ideals can become action
and through them, America can continue to be the great,
free nation she has always been.
