September Meeting

Date:      Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Place:     Wendy Cox’s house (directions will be provided)

Time:      1:00pm – 2:30pm

Book:      “Reviving the Constitution” –
A DVD Series from Hillsdale College

“What, then, is the Constitution? I will tell you. It is no vague, indefinite, floating, unsubstantial, ideal something, colored according to any man’s fancy, now a weasel, now a whale, and now nothing. . . . The American Constitution is a written instrument full and complete in itself. No Court in America, no Congress, no President, can add a single word thereto, or take a single word therefrom. It is a great national enactment done by the people, and can only be altered, amended, or added to by the people.”

—Frederick Douglass, Glasgow, Scotland, March 26, 1860

Wendy Cox has generously invited us to her home to watch the first lecture in a series from Hillsdale College on “Reviving the Constitution.”  In this first lecture,

“America’s Foundational Principles”, Dr, David J. Bobb examines the ten core principles of the American Founding – all of which are as true today as 220 years ago.

More information about the series can be found at Hillsdale College’s website:

May Book Club Meeting Announcement

The Book Club meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the Santa Clara library (on the corner of Sunset Rd and Lava Flow Drive).  Friends and family are always welcome to attend our book club discussion!

Beginning with our May Book Club meeting we are going rotate and have one person designated as our discussion leader.  They will present an overview of the book and lead the discussion through the use of discussion questions and supplemental material.  If you are interested in being a discussion leader, contact Tanya Beaulieu.

May Meeting

Three Cups of Tea

Date:                            Wednesday, May 12, 2010

Place:              Santa Clara Library

Time:                            1:00pm – 2:30pm

Book:                            Three Cups of Tea

Author:              Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin

Discussion Leader:  Gail Neumann

From the back of the book:

In 1993 a mountaineer named Greg Mortenson drifted into an impoverished Pakistan village in the Karakoram mountains after a failed attempt to climb K2.  Moved by the inhabitants’ kindness, he promised to return and build a school.  Three Cups of Tea is the story of that promise and its extraordinary outcome.  Over the next decade Mortenson built not just one but fifty-five schools – especially for girls – in the forbidding terrain that gave birth to the Taliban.  His story is at once a riveting adventure and a testament to the power of the humanitarian spirit.

This book would make a fabulous Mother’s Day present.  We will have copies available for purchase at our May lunch meeting for $9.50.  Contact Tanya Beaulieu to reserve your copy.

This fascinating book was recommended by Hyrum Smith last year. It provides an in-depth insight into the culture of Islam and the radicalization of their religion.

We will be reading the first 9 chapters for the March meeting, and then the remaining chapters for the April meeting.

Please feel free to bring friends and family to our book club discussion.

March – April Meeting

Dates:

Wednesday, March 10, 2010 – Chapters 1 - 9

Wednesday, April 14, 2010 – Chapters 10 - 20

Place: Santa Clara Library

Time: 1:00pm – 2:30pm
Book: The Looming Tower: al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11
Author: Lawrence Wright

From the back of the book:

A gripping narrative that spans five decades, The Looming Tower explains in unprecedented detail the growth of Islamic fundamentalism, the raise of al-Qaeda, and the intelligence failures that culminated in the attacks on the world Trade Center. Lawrence Wright re-creates first-hand the transformation of Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri from incompetent and the idealistic soldiers in Afghanistan to leaders of the most successful terrorist group in history. He follows FBI counterterrorism chief John O’Neil as he uncovers the emerging danger from al-Qaeda in the 1990s and struggles to track this new threat. Packed with new information and a deep historical perspective. The Looming Tower is the definitive history of the long road to September 11.
